Frequently Asked Questions
1. Will the sun, rain, snow or frost harm the decorative concrete landscape borders or commercial curbs? No. The curbs are made out of solid concrete with a special fibermesh additive for increased strength. The concrete itself is colored, not painted, which eliminates the risk of the color peeling away over time.
2. Is curbing truly affordable? Definitely. When compared to the cost of the standard selection of landscape blocks found at your local hardware store, you will see that concrete curbing is extremely competitive (sometimes even less expensive). The big difference is that with concrete curbing, we do all of the work!
3. Can the curbing be moved from one location to another? No. The curbing is one continuous piece of concrete that is custom made to flow with the layout of your landscaping.
4. Will my property be a construction zone for a period of time? No. Most installations are completed in one day. We use a truck and a specially designed trailer to transport the required materials and equipment to your property. The equipment that we use will not damage your lawn or landscaping, as they are small, mobile machines designed specifically to create continuous decorative concrete curbing.
5. Will my new curbing crack? Concrete curbing, like any other type of concrete, can and will crack. Our curbing is extremely durable, and cracking should be rare. However, an occasional crack may occur due to ground settlement or other uncontrollable events. To control cracking, we create expansion joints throughout the curbing. If the curb does crack, it should occur in the expansion joint, and will not be as visible. We can come back and repair any cracking, but remember that it is extremely difficult to match the new curbing to the original color. Many times, a small crack is much less noticeable than a patch of discoloration in the curbing.
Curb Care
1. The concrete curb does not need to be sprayed or misted with water.
2. Keep pets, children and objects away from the curb for at least 48 hours. The curbing may be "hard" to the touch, but it will still need a few days to reach its full potential.
3. Sod laying, sprinkler work and landscape work can be started 48 hours after installation. However, shovels, picks and wheelbarrows can damage the curb for several more days due to the curing process (may take up to a full week to cure).
4. If you have a landscape contractor working for you, caution him about protecting the curb from damage. If wheelbarrows are used for hauling rock over the curb, put a mound of dirt over it (6" deep) or build a ramp over the curb to keep the weight from cracking it. Never allow a tractor or truck to run over the curb.
5. If it begins to rain within 6 hours after we leave your property, try to cover the curb with plastic. Make sure sprinkler systems do not come on for at least 48 hours after installation. Irrigation, back wash from a pool, condensate lines, or rain can damage the curb during the first 48 hours.
6. Efflorescence (white powder substance) can appear on occasion and does not look good on curbing. It is generated from water sprinkling systems and can also appear after a rainstorm. The intensity of the efflorescence varies depending upon the type (hardness) of water and volume of water that gets on the curb. Check your sprinkler heads while the system is on and try to adjust them to minimize the amount of water spraying directly on the curb. If you have just planted sod and are watering frequently, efflorescence may appear more readily. Be patient, wait for your lawn to get established and clean the curb after it dries. A solution of 50/50 vinegar and water with a light brushing will remove the efflorescence. You may have to do this a few times; eventually, the efflorescence should go away.
7. On occasion, colored curbing may look "splotchy" for a few days while it is curing. This will go away as it cures and should not be confused with efflorescence.
8. Please take the time to identify underground obstacles that could be damaged during the sod cutting portion of the installation process (sprinkler systems, electric pet fences, phone lines, irrigation systems, etc.). Please inform your Curb Wurks installer of these obstacles before they begin work on your property. If we are made aware of these items in advance, we are able to avoid damaging them. If we are not made aware of potential underground obstacles, Curb Wurks cannot be held liable for damages.
Warranty & Repair
1. Your new curbing has a one-year warranty against defects in materials and craftsmanship. It will be replaced at no charge if the defect is caused by the materials we use or the way it was installed by our staff.
2. If your curbing gets damaged, we can return to your property and make necessary repairs. We charge a $300.00 minimum charge for this service when the damage is no fault of Curb Wurks. Please keep in mind, it can be very difficult to match the color of new concrete to that of old concrete. If the damage is minimal, we advise that you do not repair or replace the curbing, as mis-matched colors may look worse than a small crack or chip.
